Welcome to the Albany Public Library employees' union blog. We are an affiliate of the Civil Service Employees Union (CSEA). I hope that with this blog, we'll all be able to communicate better within the union. Being scattered over several locations, we don't often get to see each other and discuss our experiences of working at APL. I'd like to see that change and I'd like that change to start here.

What Ron said.
Pros:
1) Historical relationship
Cons:
1) No back-end support
2) Nearly impossible to contact rep
3) Flat dues structure unfair
4) Out of touch with our situation/needs, etc.
In their defense, AFSCME Council 66did a great job of getting us organized in the formative years of the union. Ken Larkin handled a number of sticky situations for us adeptly, and his successor, Kevin McKenna could be a great Labor Rep if he can learn to effectively negotiate the Council's bureaucracy. Having said that, they've given us a raw deal for several years, raising our dues erratically and without proper (or sometimes any) notification, on the people who need a dues increase the least. The council has been unresponsive to our needs and shows no sign of changing. For all these reasons, I think we should leave.
